Shah Rukh Khan Returns As a Lover Boy
NDTV has an exclusive look at Farah and Shahrukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om.
Om Shanti Om, Farah Khan’s second film as director after the superhit Main Hoon Na is a tribute to Farah’s favourite decade, The 70’s.
It’s a love story between Shah Rukh Khan, who plays a struggling actor and a former model Deepika Padukone. But it’s not a run of the mill story.
“It’s a strange love story in the sense that it’s not a conventional love story not boy meets girl and the girl loves the boy without giving away too much. It’s very unusual I would say it’s half a love story and then it goes to another space,” said Farah Khan, Director.
After playing a hockey coach to 18 girls in the blockbuster Chake De Shahrukh is back at playing the quintessential lover boy.
“He is not at all what he was in Chak De. He is big and flamboyant, fun and entertaining and over the top and he is singing songs. He has also done a bare chested number in the film for the first time like Half Monty and big songs. If people think they are going to see Shahrukh of Chak De that puts a lot of pressure on me! It’s a complete different Shahrukh,” said Farah.
“We have lot of love in the film it is an unrequited kind of love story. So, there are nice love moments in this film but just touched upon because the story is between people of different status. So there is this bechargi for the hero and the heroine is vivacious and besutiful. They are mismatched and there is purity in their relationship. I hope that comes through because that is the essence,” said Shah Rukh.
Whether SRK’S lover boy charms still persist and will once again break box office records is something that will become clear on September 9 when Om shanti Om hits the theatres.

Farah Khan has more aces up her sleeve!
What we want to tell you is that even after assembling 30 top Bollywood stars (from different generations) for a single song, director Farah Khan is not sitting idle and has more aces up her sleeve!
As per sources, she now intends to shoot a scene with three top stars, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan. The scene will be incorporated in the climax of OM SHANTI OM, but not necessarily alongside Shah Rukh Khan.
We must add here that Akshay, Hrithik and Abhishek do not feature in the above mentioned 30-star highlight song of OM SHANTI OM.

"We have no problem, there has been no fight," Farah Khan
It was recently reported that actor Shah Rukh Khan was miffed with producer Sajid Nadiadwala for not airing the promos of Om Shanti Om before the screening of Heyy Babyy . It was said that the OSO team was quite miffed with the Heyy Babyy team. However, this story ain’t true.
For on Raksha Bandhan, sister Farah Khan spent good times with bro Sajid Khan (director of Heyy Babyy ), and SRK, too, on reading the report, promptly sent a text message to buddy, producer Nadiadwala, stating that he wasn’t angry at all about anything. "What kind of rubbish rumours are these," says Farah. "We have no problem, there has been no fight, and nothing of that sort will ever happen."
Here’s to the shanti that prevails on both sides!

This Season Bollywood In Flashback Mode
While Mishra’s Khoya Khoya Chand starring Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan is set in the 50s and 60s, Farah’s Om Shanti Om casts an eye on the tinsel town of the 70s.
“It’s a period film, the rocking era of the 1970s. Their hairstyles are completely over the top. I hope people love the fun aspect. There is drama and a love story too,” says Farah.
“Khoya Khoya Chand is about two people who get caught in the mad world of the 50s and 60s. Nikhat is a young 18-year-old person, who’s mother pushes her into the film industry,” says Mishra.
Although both films are set in the Hindi film industry, Om Shanti Om and Khoya Khoya Chand are as different as chalk and cheese.
They are, however, much in the same spirit as the previous films made by their respective directors.
“I think it is a film more modern than Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, I feel difficult to slot, it is a bit of heightened realism. It is my most romantic film till date,” says Mishra.
“My film has a more coherent story than Main Hoon Na. It is ten times madder than Main Hoon Na, we are completely taking each other’s trip, Shah Rukh’s (Khan) trip,” says Farah.
So while Om Shanti Om stars ShahRukh Khan as a struggling actor in the 70s, complete with bell bottoms and flashy jackets, Mishra’s Khoya Khoya Chand features Soha Ali Khan as yesteryear’s legend.
To get under the skin of her character, Soha used much of her mother’s old wardrobe.
“Hairstyles of the 70s, my referencing is the Bollywood of that time. From Hindi films, Shah Rukh wears clothes like Rajesh Khanna or Rishi Kapoor in those times,” said Farah.
“You don’t drown in the quagmire of detail but yes, we have looked at the costumes of the stars of that time and the sets of that time,” said Mishra.
There’s little that is similar in both films. Except perhaps the spirit of both films, or the intention behind making both films.
For both Sudhir Mishra and Farah Khan, their new film is their tribute to the film industry, a chance to hold a mirror to a world they know so intimately themselves.
“I’m not making a sleaze show. I love those people. It’s also about the madness and joy of being in the movies,” said Mishra. “It’s not a sleazy look on Bollywood. It’s not going the Madhur Bhandarkar way. It’s not cynical or sleazy, it’s just a happy movie.
So it’s flashback tinsel town in the weeks ahead. Get ready for your trip down Bollywood Boulevard. And that’s a cut.

Om Shanti Om-itted!
A source says, “Shah Rukh is not the one to be upset over trivial issues but when it comes to his films, he doesn’t take things lying down. SRK is very close to Sajid Khan because of Farah and he never thought that Sajid would be so careless about SRK’s film, especially since his sister Farah is the director of the film. SRK had also gone out of his way to do a special item song for the film on Sajid’s request. However, he is not very happy that his promos went missing in some of the trials, especially the ones held at Yash Raj Studios. SRK also lost his cool as he got very little feedback from the trials. In fact, when he would call to inquire about the feedback from his friends who saw the trailers, they said that they never saw the promos. That’s when SRK called up Sajid to express his grievances.”
When contacted Sajid Khan said, “The promos of OSO have been shown in all the trials and now it is being shown in theatres across the country.” He seemed to be unaware of SRK and Farah’s displeasure. So what really happened? Industry insiders are hinting at deliberate sabotage.
Farah Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala
Meanwhile, Sajid Nadiadwala, producer of Heyy Babyy, says, “700 promo prints of OSO have been attached to the negatives of my film in a laboratory. It cannot be edited during the screening.”
And yet, we have information that the OSO promos were not shown at certain important trial shows. A filmmaker on condition of anonymity says, “The screenings organised by Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh at Yashraj Studios didn’t show any OSO trailer. Farah is very upset about it.”
Farah Khan refused to comment on the issue.

For all you fans of SRK and Deepika, who just can’t wait to tune in to the show we have an exclusive excerpts of KJO’s conversation with the dimpled duo.
Excerpts from the interview:
Karan: SRK, you are doing ‘Om Shanti Om’, a film again with Farah?
SRK: I had even promised Farah once that if I would strip, it would be for her film!
Karan: So, cool you look... new hair do... muscles... 6 pack... I heard
SRK: 4
Farah: 4 have come... 2 to go...
SRK: I am still working on the last two...
Karan: What made you make this change?
SRK: My son feels I am fat...
Karan: He thinks you are fat?
SRK: He thinks I am fat... He beat up a girl... because, first she called me an asshole... beep beep... then she said I look very ugly on KBC... sorry Star... he didn’t react... he controlled himself... finally when she said, your father is fat... he kicked her... so I got angry with him... and he said, Papa, you know what, it is not her fault...its you... why are you fat? because she said, ugly, I didn’t mind... you looked handsome on KBC... you are not an asshole I know.... You are a cool guy but you are fat Papa.
Karan: Aryan thinks you are fat!
SRK: Just imagine... what he thinks about you and Farah? Let’s not get into that...
Karan: Deepika, are you nervous to be on the show?
Deepika: I am very nervous!
Karan: Was it the same kind of nervousness when you were offered this film... you had to work with Shah Rukh, with Farah... were you completely like all nerves the first day...
Deepika: It was the same kind of nervousness; specially on the first day... although Farah went all out to make me feel comfortable... she introduced me to Shah Rukh well in advance...
Karan: And everyone tells that he is a terrific co-star ...
Deepika: He is fantastic to work with... He made me feel comfortable.
Karan: It feels special that you are a part of such a monstrous project?
Deepika: Yes and we have almost come to the end of it
SRK: I thought Karan was saying you are part of such a monster (pointing to Farah)
Deepika: No, she was wonderful...
Karan: Are you dating Ranbir Kapoor?
Deepika: We are friends.
So, don’t forget to tune in as Karan chats with Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan and Deepika Padukone on Koffee with Karan this Sunday, August 26th at 9 p.m . on Star One and Star World.

SRK The Super-Hero
While Superman goes ‘Up, up and away’ before taking off, our desi prefers ‘Oodi Baba’.
Apparently SRK so liked playing being goofy that he did retake after retake just to repeat the experience.
Oodi baba, now that’s a whacky superhero!

Om Shanti Om Trailer is a Grand Spectacle
The dream girl is off to a premiere of her big ticket flick while love-struck SRK (in a check coat) is driven away by guards forcefully. Montages of transition follow. A convertible biggie car stops with a screech. ‘STAR’ shines on its number plate. SRK has a Filmfare award in his hand while Padukone draped in a Kanjeevram sleeveless sari dances away to glory on a big dhol (obviously it’s an ode to Sridevi of Himmatwala). Helen is not to be left behind, as totally transformed Deepika oozes out of a life like cage draped in the Monika ensemble. Phew!
SRK on his part showcases many of the characters that he has played in his career. There are traces of Raj-Rahul as he dances in a lavish party, sings the open-chested romantic duets, rides a macho bike, the blood smeared Baazigar who also dabbles in Devdas for a while. There’s a Shah Rukh Khan voiceover that takes this ninety second promo forward proclaiming adherence to escapist cinema. Yes, no bad endings for this one. “Picture abhi khatam nahin hui hai,” he says in an inebriated tone. Well right!
The Om Shanti Om first look promo is exciting, grand, opulent and surely spells magnificence. All you guys who missed SRK’s star-power in Chak De India, it seems the king won’t disappoint you in this one. Deepika Padukone is undoubtedly the find of the decade. She Rocks! In fact she overpowers everything that comes in her way. Only disappointment was Shreyas Talpade’s hackneyed hairstyle. A let down one must say. Even Shah Rukh’s Devdas act left something to be desired. Nevertheless, the promo makes you very curious as to what the whole film must be like. Let the fireworks begin….

Exclusive - Om Shanti Om Official Trailer
The trailor then has Shah Rukh Khan saying (in the background), "Take 2, Ladies and gentlemen, Kehte hain, agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho to puri kaynat use tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jati hai. Aap sab ne mujhe meri chaahat se mila diya. Hmmmmmm. Thanks, thanks very much. Hamari filmon ki tarah hamari zindagi mein bhi end tak sab kuch theek hi ho jaata hai. Happees Ending! Aur agar theek na ho to woh 'The End' nahin! Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost. Picture abhi baaki hai haan."
(Translated- "Take 2, Ladies and gentlemen, It is said that if you want something from the bottom of your heart and soul then the entire universe tries to unite both of you. All of you helped me get my love. Hmmmmmm. Thanks, thanks very much. Like in our films, even in our lives, it's all sorted out by the end. Happees Endings! And if all is not fine, then it's not 'The End! The film is not over my friend. There is more to come.)
While the above commentary continues, graphics from 'OM SHANTI OM' play on. It is obvious that the movie recreates scenes from a few blockbusters of the 70s and 80s, and Shah Rukh Khan imitates a few superstars from the era!

Shah Rukh Khan will strip for a scene in his upcoming film Om Shanti Om
And now that Farah is directing Om Shanti Om for his production house Red Chillies Entertainment, SRK has fulfilled his promise.
SRK and Farah made this disclosure on Karan Johar’s show Koffee With Karan. In fact, SRK went on to say that he had been building his body for his role in the film.
SRK said it was his son Aryan who made him aware that he was “fat” and needed to lose weight. Since then, SRK said, he had been working on his body and had managed to develop “four packs, two short of six packs”.
While both SRK and Farah refrained from speaking about how much SRK’s stripping scene in the film would reveal, Farah did say that SRK did not go fully monty. And she added that the audience would love the scene.
The show also featured SRK’s co-star in the film, Deepika Padukone.

OM SHANTI OM music in September
Wait for hearing the music of one of the biggest films of 2007 would finally be over in around a month from now.
OM SHANTI OM, an extravagant offering from Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan, is aiming for a November 9th release. The film’s promotion is all set to get started in a week from now while the music album is expected to hit the stands somewhere around middle of September.
Music of film has been in news ever since the project was announced. To begin with A.R. Rahman was finalised as a composer. Later due to certain differences over holding of rights, replacement for Rahman was sought and duo of Vishal-Shekhar was instead roped in. Also, services of Pyarelal [of Lakshmikant-Pyarelal duo] were sought to arrange one of the songs from the film.
As per insiders, Vishal and Shekhar have come up with a terrific soundtrack that traverses genres. A complete Bollywood soundtrack that goes with the ‘masala’ flavor of the film, OM SHANTI OM is one music album to watch out for as it hits the stands next month.
