OSO : Completely different ... and dazzling
This thing is huge.
In true Bollywood fashion, the story involves comedy, tragedy, family, action, adventure, romance, betrayal, friendship, melodrama, failure, success, death, reincarnation and lots and lots of singing and dancing. The film is as visually dazzling and colourful as an explosion in a Crayola factory.
Shah Rukh Khan stars as Om Prakash Makhija, a callow hopeful in the movie business in the early 1970s.
He's a bit player in love with a superstar: Shantipriya (the impossibly beautiful Deepika Padukone) and he bumbles around her on movie sets in a comical fashion. The laughs turn to drama, however, when a fire breaks out during filming. Om rescues Shantipriya when no one else will, and they become friends.
Om is a gentle hero who dreams of being a superstar himself, and of one day winning movie awards. And of winning Shantipriya's heart.
But he soon learns that his love for Shantipriya is not going to be returned. The tale turns to melodrama, deception and tragedy for them both.
Luckily, reincarnation saves the day. The story moves forward 30 years into present time, and Om has been re-born as the son of a Bollywood superstar. He's a star himself, and all his dreams of material wealth have come true. (And all the actors have become Westernized and their acting style has changed dramatically.) Some disturbing flashbacks help Om reconnect with his previous life (stop laughing) and prompt him to try to solve an old crime and bring a killer to justice. And reunite with his mother and brother. Now the film has become a thriller ...
There's never a dull moment in Om Shanti Om, and the film has a general air of exhilaration and energy that makes it a pleasure to watch. The picture is bursting at the seams with movie stars and gorgeous costumes and breathtaking sets; it's so over-the-top it's sort of a spoof of Bollywood, or what they call a 'Gosh Gollywood' movie.
We just made that up.
Bollywood fans will be delighted with Om Shanti Om and newcomers will be dazzled. It has some of the wackiest song lyrics and dance routines imaginable, and in one memorable sequence, every entertainment celebrity in South Asia turns up to sing and dance. My Heart Is Full Of The Pain of Disco is our particular fave among the musical numbers, but they're all spectacular, and they all involve 17,000 costume changes.
In Om Shanti Om, even the end credits are a massive production number.
If you're looking for something completely different, this could be it.
